STOP THE SHAKE: UNDERSTANDING PULSATION DAMPENERS

Think of a positive displacement pump like a mechanical heart. Just like your heart squeezes and relaxes to move blood, positive displacement pumps (such as peristaltic and AODD pumps) create flow by pumping fluid in a rhythmic pattern. This creates the distinctive pulsing action in your process fluid.

This pulsating action can cause:

  • Excessive noise and pipe vibration
  • Damage to pump system equipment
  • Reduced accuracy of meters and gauges
  • Shortened component life
  • Premature pump failure and inefficiency

Blacoh SENTRY™ pulsation dampeners are engineered specifically to address these issues. Pulsation dampeners have a flexible internal bladder that, when properly charged, absorb the pulsations and help to create a smoother laminar flow. In other words, pulsation dampeners absorb the kinetic energy of your moving fluid, smoothing out the flow and pressure of your system – which means they minimize the damage caused by system fluctuations.

Water hammer (or hydraulic shock) occurs when fluid in motion is suddenly started, stopped or forced to change direction. Quick closing valves, rapid pump startup/shutdown, even changes in the pipe profile, can cause an abrupt change in fluid velocity producing violent and sometimes catastrophic water hammer. Surge suppressors act as shock absorbers by accumulating and releasing process fluid as needed to slow the rate of fluid velocity change to a level low enough to prevent water hammer.

Dampener pre-charge pressure depends on the specific application, usage, and dampener model or type. Generally speaking, pulsation dampeners installed at the pump discharge are pre-charged to approximately 80% of expected mean system pressure. Once the pump is started to generate system pressure, the charge can be increased or decreased to optimize the dampening effect.

AIR CONTROL OPTIONS

CHARGEABLE
No permanent source of compressed gas is required. With the gas fill valve, the dampener can be manually bled or charged to the required pressure setting.

AUTOMATIC
The dampener automatically adjusts as system pressure increases or decreases , and resets to be ready to start dampening again when the system restarts.

ADJUSTABLE
With a compressed air line permanently attached, the regulator allows for an easy, convenient method to adjust dampener pressure with system pressure changes.
